this is a book about a girl named violet and a boy named theodore who find each other on the ledge of the bell tower of their school. theodore is known at their school for being a freak - a weirdo - and rumor goes around school that violet was a hero who saved theodore from offing himself. although, that's not really quite how it happened.
'all the bright places' took depression and suicide way too lightly for my liking. there were a few times i had to put the book down and take a deep breath before i continued to read because it felt like suicide was treated as a joke, almost. i have a lot to say about this book, because i myself have depression and suicidal tendencies, and i can relate all too much. this book hit too close to home, so maybe that's why i didn't enjoy it as much as i hoped.
i couldn't connect to either of the main characters very much, even though i share a lot of similarities with theodore finch. both characters are such quirky try-hards - quoting virginia woolf to each other on facebook, even. that made me roll my eyes.
the writing style was nice, but it was hard to appreciate when such serious matters were thrown around lightly throughout the entire novel. this book is really overrated, in my opinion. at least i finally read it and got that out of the way.
